Juliet Bickford
As Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz, "There's no place like home!"

Juliet Bickford is happy to be returning home to Hampton Roads.  She grew up in Hampton and has deep roots in the area.  The Bickford family settled in Hampton in the 1860's.  Her great-grandfather, James V. Bickford was the mayor of Hampton for 25 years (1920-1946).  And Juliet's family and friends in the area are happy to have her back.

Juliet joined WTKR in March 2008 as the weekday morning anchor and consumer reporter.  Prior to coming to Norfolk, Juliet worked as the morning and noon anchor at WSLS in Roanoke, VA for five and a half years.  She also did consumer reporting.  Two weeks after starting at WSLS, Juliet covered one of her first big stories -- the Short family murders and the search for missing 9-year-old Jennifer Short.  Throughout her time in Roanoke, Juliet also covered other significant breaking news from the anchor desk -- including the search for escaped inmate William Morva on Virginia Tech's campus and the death of Jerry Fallwell.

But, by far the most difficult story she had to cover was the Virginia Tech Shootings on April 16, 2007.  Juliet was live at the anchor desk as the first reports of a shooting at Tech started coming into the newsroom.  She spent the next eight hours doing live continuous coverage for WSLS as the devastating details continued to come in about the tragedy.  In the weeks following the shootings, Juliet did numerous stories about the victims and helped the community pay tribute to all of those lost at Virginia Tech.

Juliet's first on-air job was in 2001 with KACB-TV in San Angelo, TX where she was the weekend anchor and a reporter.  In West Texas, she quickly learned about rodeos and the cattle business.  And she had her first run-in with a rattlesnake!

Juliet went to School at St. Mary's Star of the Sea School in Hampton and Walsingham Academy in Williamsburg.  She graduated from Peninsula Catholic High School in Newport News.  Juliet went on to Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA and graduated with degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Theater.

She got one of her most exciting assignments thanks to Washington & Lee.  Just after graduation, Juliet won the Todd Smith Fellowship for International Reporting and reported at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.  She wrote stories for the Tampa Tribune newspaper and reported for various radio stations across the country.

In college, Juliet won numerous awards and scholarships for her work. She received scholarships from the Radio and Television News Directors Association and the Society of Professional Journalists. Juliet was a runner-up twice in the Hearst Broadcasting competition and a regional winner in the SPJ mark of excellence awards.  In college, Juliet also interned at TV stations in the Norfolk and Roanoke markets.

Juliet grew up on the Hampton River and is glad to smell the salt water again.  When she's not at work -- you can find her boating and jet skiing.  She also likes to snow ski and rollerblade.  Juliet always enjoyed acting, singing, and dancing and now she loves going to the theater and the opera.
