POQUOSON - A 2-year-old girl who fell into a pool in Poquoson over the weekend has been upgraded from critical to serious condition this morning.

Police chief Cliff Bowen said there was "cautious optimism" as of early this morning when the girl showed "an improved ability to breathe on her own" at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.

The girl lives with her mother in York County, and they were visiting the mother's fiancee in Poquoson when the girl fell into the pool, Bowen said.

Emergency responders were called at 2:03 p.m. to the 900 block of Poquoson Avenue. They arrived to find a neighbor performing CPR on the girl, Bowen said.

The girl walked through a series of doors to the backyard where the pool is located, Bowen said. The girl was found — he didn't know by whom — face down in the pool and not breathing.

Bowen said the incident is still under investigation.
