Allen Williams of York County is charged with first-degree murder. (York County Sheriff's Department)
YORK -
A York County man died Sunday after he was injured during a morning altercation with an intruder at his home.
Thomas Ragans, 46, of the 1500 block of Dandy Loop Road, died several hours after being taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center following the 7:30 a.m. incident, said Sgt. Dennis Ivey Jr., a York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office investigator.
The death marks the first York County homicide in nearly two years.
Ragans suffered head trauma in a fight that ensued in the course of a break-in at his home. Ivey said no weapon was involved and the incident was not a home invasion.
Ragans' wife, Robyn, got "caught up in the fight" and suffered a minor leg injury, Ivey said.
Allen Dale Williams Jr., 38, recently of Seaford, was charged with first degree murder, malicious wounding, assault, property damage and burglary. Ivey said Williams was between residences and may have been staying with relatives.
Ivey said Williams was not found at the scene, but he "reached out to" police after the incident and went voluntarily with investigators after he was picked up at a Hampton Hardee's restaurant on Semple Farm Road.
A jailer at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail said this Monday that Williams is being held without bond.
Ivey said Williams had cuts to his head and was treated at Mary Immaculate Hospital before he was arrested.
Williams and Ragans were described as acquaintances. Ivey said the men grew up in the area and knew each other.
The Sheriff's Office received a call from Ragans Saturday night. During the call, Ragans said he had been receiving threats that day from a man he identified as "Allen," Ivey said.
A sheriff's office report was taken, but deputies were not dispatched to the house Saturday because "we had limited information," Ivey said. "There were no beefs we know of before this."
The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office did not release information that a homicide had occurred until just before 9 a.m. Monday — more than 24 hours after the incident. Ivey said there was a delay because he was with the suspect all day and the rest of the sheriff's investigators were busy working the case.
The last York County homicide occurred on New Year's Day 2008 when Ryan Lewis Dunn, a Newport News teenager, was shot to death at a party in Lackey. A 15-year-old was arrested in April 2008 and charged with involuntary manslaughter, Ivey said. York County Commonwealth's Attorney Eileen Addison said evidence in that case was insufficient and the charges formally dropped.
