Jim Arrowood says he and his wife came up with an emergency plan for their kids a few years ago. But that plan never had to be used until yesterday when their son Matthew wound up with a gun pointed at his head, while his dad was inside the 7-11 on Haygood Road.
Matthew Arrowood was sitting in his dad's truck when he says Damon Jordan came up and started talking to him. Matthew had been taught not to talk with strangers, when he didn't answer Jordan, the 13-year-old said Jordan pulled a gun.
"I was just sitting in the truck waiting for my dad and this one dude started talking to me and I just didn't answer him so he put a gun to my head and said get out of the car."
Police say Damon Jordan stole the Arrowwood's truck but he didn't leave with Matthew. The 13 year old Bayside Middle School student was smart enough to jump out and run away, just like his dad taught him.
"I told him anybody has a gun just get down and take cover and he did he got out of the truck and took cover at the other end then waited until it was clear and came and got me." Jim said.
"The next thing i know he's coming in saying 'dad, dad he too the truck he took the truck.' And I said who and he said that guy he put a gun to my head."
Police spotted Jordan driving the truck on South Independence. They say they chased him and caught him after jumped out and tried to make a run for it about a mile later. Arrowwood says none of this would have happened if his son hadn't done what he was taught.
Tonight Damon Jordan is in jail on car theft charges and Jim Arrowwood says he feels okay. He's getting ready to deploy to Iraq and after this ordeal, knows his son can handle himself while he is away.
"I already feel 100 percent better. I trust my family to make the right decisions, my children to make the right decisions and I feel 100 percent better."
Arrowood says he's greatfull to police for tracking his truck down so fast. He says it has a little damage but nothing that can't be fixed.
