Because of what they do, the SEALs' activities in places like Afghanistan are a closely held secret. They operate in small groups, sometimes behind enemy lines. The Navy says that Adam Brown died after being involved in a fight with heavily armed militants somewhere in the country.

A Navy spokesperon said he was swept away while crossing a river while fighting in Afghanistan. Harris was based at Naval Amphibious Little Creek.

Senior Chief Petty Officer Thomas Valentine died February 13, 2008, when his parachute failed to open properly during a night jump near the desert town of Marana, AZ, according to a Navy investigation. He was attached to Naval Special Warfare Development Group at Dam Neck Annex. A month later, on March 6, 2008, Chief Special Warfare Operator, Lance Vaccaro died from injuries suffered while conducting parachute training operations in the same area. He was also assigned to an East-Coast based SEAL team.
Then on September 11th, 2008 two more SEALs, Chief Petty Officers John Marcum and Jason Freiwald were killed after coming under what the Pentagon described as 'heavy enemy fire'.
Then on May 7, 2009, Chief Special Warfare Operator Eric Shellenberger was killed during a night training dive near Bremerton, WA. , also in a training mission. According to a Navy spokesperson, drowning was listed as the cause of death.
