Matthew Nash came out of court after being arraigned in New York looking haggard. One eye was swollen and he looked disheveled. His stepfather says he thinks Nash in now in the kind of trouble they won't be able to get him out of. Virginia Beach Police were able to quickly identify Nash from surveillance video yesterday because Nash has been a pain in the department's side for a while.
Police here first came face to face with Nash on August 17th, 2005. Nash's roommate, Christopher Rawlins was arrested by U.S. Marshalls because he was a fugitive. Rawlins told the police that Nash was headed to an apartment with a large supply of ecstasy. When he arrived, police found 211 hits of "X" as well as some marijuana.
Court records show that Nash was found guilty of possession of marijuana and of manufacturing a controlled substance in 2005. Nash was given ten years in jail but served just two before getting out on probation.
But the court records show Nash got into trouble last year while on probation. He was caught doing drugs, leaving his house without permission and not checking in with his parole officer. Virginia Beach police brought him back here from upstate New York and put him back in jail.
Nash allegedly stole the Hilel's minivan just two days after turning 24. Last night, he lead police on two high speed chases getting away from them twice in New York before police finally found him in the woods off a rural state road.
Officials say he will be held in New York State until Virginia Beach prosecutors can extradite him back to Hampton Roads.
