Police have identified the eight victims of the deadly shootings in Appomattox county. Four of them were children, including a 4-year-old. The other four were adults. They are:
- Ronald I. Scruggs II, 16, of Dillwyn, Va.
- Emily A. Quarles, 15, of Appomattox, Va.
- Karen Quarles, 43, of Appomattox, Va.
- Jonathan L. Quarles, 43, of Appomattox, Va.
- Dwayne S. Sipe, 38, of Appomattox, Va.
- Lauralee Sipe, 38, of Appomattox, Va.
- Joshua Sipe, 4, of Appomattox, Va.
- Morgan L. Dobyns, 15, of Appomattox, Va.
All were somehow connected to the man arrested in the case, 39-year-old Christopher Speight.
Police says Speight knew all the victims and had lived at the home where the slayings occurred tuesday, but they did not outline the victims' relationships.
But people who know Speight claim two of the victims were his sister and brother and law.
A storekeeper in the town of Appomattox says Speight lived with them, and was worried he would be kicked out of the house.
A family attorney says Speight had a history of mental problems and ran away from his sister's home during a breakdown in 2007.
The victims' bodies have all been taken to the medical examiners office in Richmond.
Christopher Speight is charged with one count of first degree murder, but more are expected.
