Feb 6 - 13th Annual Black History Program Celebration Breakfast Celebrate the start of Black History Month with members of the Aberdeen Gardens Historic and Civic Association at the 13th annual Black History Program Celebration Breakfast. The event takes place 8:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m. at the Queen Street North building, located at 98 N. Armistead Avenue in Hampton, Virginia. This year's theme is entitled "Sharing Quadricentennial Moments of Aberdeen." The breakfast will include speakers David Barr III, an actor and playwright from Chicago, Illinois, and Eric Taylor, a gospel violinist from Newport News, Virginia. Barr is a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists and a member of the Black Ensemble Theatre's EBlack Playwright's Initiative. He was named a 2000 recipient of the Donahue-Tremaine Award for excellence in playwriting and in 2005 he received the Joseph Jefferson Citation for "Best New Work." Taylor is an up-and-coming musician with local ties. Other breakfast highlights include the presentation of a "Historical Recognition Award" to Bernard West and a "Special Recognition Award" to Horace Goins. Being granted "Elder Status" is Pearl Bellamy and Shirley Morgan. Admission to the breakfast is $25.00 per person ($15.00 for 12 and under). From 1:00pm to 3pm there will also be a viewing of the movie The Tuskegee Airmen. This poignant and inspiring tale of one family's desperate flight to freedom is based on the children's book written and illustrated by Jeanette Winter. The planetarium production incorporates Winter's original artwork and music by Lovey Williams into a timeless experience that can be enjoyed by all ages.
