If you're thinking about buying a new appliance then you may want to wait. There's a new government program on the horizon that will help you pay for them. Its called Cash for Appliances.

News Channel 3's Juliet Bickford uncovered more on the program.

This program will be run by the state government and the rebates will vary state-by-state. Virginia and North Carolina are still in the planning stages of "Cash for Appliances," but we do know Virginia will have about 7 and a half million dollars to hand out and North Carolina will have nearly 9-million.

John Clifton has seen a lot of changes in the 25 years he's owned Doctor Johnny's Appliances in Virginia Beach.

"So, today a washer uses a third of the energy a washer did 10-15 years ago."

Lately, business has been slow for the entire industry but the new "Cash for Appliances" program could change all that.

"I think that these programs where they're having a little incentive to do this, I think it's going to kick start them to start spending money."

If you buy a new, more energy efficient appliance like an energy star refrigerator or washing machine, you may qualify for a rebate from the state government.

Here in Virginia, the rebate program will run by the utility companies who already have rebates in place or ones they proposed. This will just add more money so more customers will get the rebates. As far as which appliances qualify and how much money you will get back that will vary by your utility company. Virginia is still trying to work out all of those details.

For example, the money for cash for appliances could go toward Virginia Natural Gas' existing rebate program. Earlier this year, it offered customers five-hundred dollars for buying more energy efficient furnaces and tank less water heaters.

The savings don't stop there with this new program. Clifton says choosing energy star appliances will pay off two-fold.

"They will get a discount, a rebate up front. Plus, they will also have savings every year. So, every year they're making money by saving electricity and water."

In North Carolina, the department of energy says it plans to give out the rebates on its own not through the utility companies however, nothing has been finalized.

As for when the rebate programs will start, both states hope to have them ready to go by November or December.
