Do You Think The Highest Paid City And State Employees Are Making What They Deserve?

Money. Who has it and how much? Now, more than ever, Newschannel 3 wanted to know. Especially now when both cities in Hampton Roads and the state of Virginia are facing budget shortfalls.

When it comes to the salary list in the Commonwealth, the biggest money can be found on campus. At William and Mary, Provost Geoffrey Feiss makes $296,000. President Taylor Reveley, $332,000 at VCU, Provost Steven Gottfredson gets $264,000 while President Eugene Trani takes home nearly $400,000. Closer to the top of the list are Provost Cynda Johnson and President Charles Steger at Virginia Tech. Respectively, they make $414,000 and-$457,000. Our last stop is UVA, where President John Casteen earns $487,000 and Dr Steve Dekosky, Dean of the School of Medicine, makes $650,000. The Provost of UVA, Dr. Tim Garson, makes $700,000.

We also took a look at city workers in Hampton Roads that make the most. In Virginia Beach, where half of the employees making more than 150-thousand dollars, work in the city managers office. City manager, Jim Spore, makes nearly $220,000. That's more than any city employee in all of Hampton Roads.

  • Obviouly overpaidpolitic-al jobs:get rid of these miscreants: we MUST live within our means. why even ask?

  • How about looking at police officers in Isle of Wight ($33,000) or Poquoson, or even the airports? There are many cops who live paycheck to paycheck! It's bad when teachers make far more than officers who put their lives on the line every single day and may not come home one night.

    Rob @ 12:27 PM EDT, Mar 27, 2009

  • Why do so many people think that public employees should work for free or next to nothing? Why are people upset that their tax dollars pay for a city official to make over $100,000 yet don't care at all that their $500/month car payment goes to pay the $20 million salary of a car company CEO?

Way Too Much @ 11:46 AM EDT, Mar 27, 2009

  • All raises should be frozen for a Co. That is not making a profit. Any top official should not be getting bonuses or raises if their work performance is not improving a Co. situation.Their is to much waste and theft in all areas, if it were stopped there would be more money for raises.

    Debra C. @ 8:08 AM EDT, Mar 27, 2009

  • People should be more concerned about themselves and their own families, rather than what their neighbors are making. This type of mindset led to events like the Nazi's coming to power in Germany, and Castro gaining power in Cuba. Tyrants use jealousy and fear of the people to gain power.

  • teachers should be making that money

    sally @ 11:30 PM EDT, Mar 25, 2009

  • People make more over their careers based on experience and track record. But where is the outrage over 100 million to wack a ball straight out of school. We all pay for their salaries embeded in everything we buy. $200,000 to run a city of 400,000 people =50 cents a person.

    doug @ 11:26 PM EDT, Mar 25, 2009

  • I know quite a few city employees who don't run the city but risk their lives everyday protecting us. For this they make less than 1/4 of these officials. I don't advocate harassment of those officials, but I do think there needs to be a change.
