Officer Lonnie Lee Moore, Jr. of the Elizabeth City Police Department was killed as a result of single car accident in the early morning hours Sunday morning.
Moore was returning from a high school reunion in Winston Salem, North Carolina when he lost control of his 1997 BMW. The car left the roadway and Moore was ejected from the vehicle. A passenger in the vehicle with Moore is now listed in stable condition.
According to witnesses who were following Officer Moore, he swerved to avoid colliding with a deer on Hwy 13 in Bertie County between Williamston and Windsor, North Carolina.
Moore had been a member of the Elizabeth City Police Department for 3 years, and had spent 18 years in law enforcement.
