Newport News, Va. - Newport News police have arrested 19-year-old Wayne Raynod King after he brought a gun into Denbigh High School this morning.
King told officers he brought the gun to school for his own protection. Other students say King has been involved in several altercations at school.
"He always had problems like, everybody I guess disliked him, that's the only reason," said Jerrod Reid, student.
Shortly after 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, the principal at the school received information from a concerned parent that King had a gun in his possession at school.
A school security officer and the school's resource officer quietly removed King from the classroom and to a nearby secured area of the school where an unloaded .380 caliber handgun was found in his pocket, as well as rounds of ammunition in a clip.
Some Denbigh High School students say they are not surprised there are weapons at school. Katie Reams, junior, says she has heard other students talking.
"They just mentioned how there are guns at school," Reams said.
Newport News police encourage students to report weapons in school, and they commend the concerned parent who called in to the school's principal. The parent gave King's name and said he had a gun.
King has been charged with one count each of having a concealed weapon and having a firearm on school property. He was placed in the custody of the Newport News City Jail without bond. He declined to be interviewed.
