Last Friday, February 5 at approximately 1:30 a.m. Virginia Beach police responded to reports that two male suspects wearing masks violently assaulted a man and woman.
The two suspects used a gun to violently assault a man and sexually assault a woman in the parking lot of the Bayside Arms Apartments on Dandy Court.
Less than ten hours after the sexual assault and robberies occurred, detectives had the main suspect in custody. Based on the information provided by the victim, the forensic examination of the scene, and detectives following every investigative lead they had, a 17-year-old suspect was arrested near his residence without incident at 11:18 a.m. today.
He is currently being held in the Virginia Beach Juvenile Detention Center without bond. He was charged with Robbery, Rape, Sodomy, Abduction with the Intent to Defile, Wearing a Mask in Public, and two counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony for the first incident that occurred on Dandy Court. He was also charged with Robbery and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony for the second incident on Dandy Court. More charges are pending as other cases are being investigated.
This string of attacks came less than two days after a similar assault at the North Beach Apartment complex in Virginia Beach where a man was similarly robbed and hit in the head with a gun.
"We had some burglaries then we had some robberies then the robberies turned into pistol whippings. And then we had the one robbery where the female was raped and sexually assaulted. Yeah the violence was escalating, we were very concerned," said Adam Bernstein, Virginia Beach police.
Investigators are fairly sure the attacks are related incidents.
The identity of the second suspect is still being sought. Anyone with information regarding these crimes is encouraged to call the Virginia Beach Crime Solvers Office at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (1-888-562-5887). Callers remain anonymous and could be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward if their information leads to an arrest.
