One lane of the westbound Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel is now open to traffic. Motorists should expect severe congestion throughout the area during evening rush hour.
The right lane is opened to traffic with a reduced speed limit to 25 MPH from bridge to bridge. Currently, traffic is backed-up on I-64 West to Little Creek Road, approximately 7 miles.
Congestion remains heavy on I-664 North from Bowers Hill to the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. An earlier crash occurred closed the tunnel for approximately one hour. Traffic is moving again, but is backed-up past Bowers Hill, approximately 13 miles.
Northbound traffic on the James River Bridge remains heavy due to an earlier disabled vehicle.
Crews anticipate the second lane of I-64 West through the HRBT will remain closed for several more hours. This will allow crews to make needed repairs to the water main and electrical alert systems.
VDOT closed the westbound tube of the I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel at 6:30 this morning due to a malfunctioning water main pump. Crews are continuing to drain the water buildup inside one of the tunnel's pump houses. Once all of the water is removed, crews will assess the damage and begin to make the needed repairs to the water main and electrical alert systems.
Crews believe the water main pump malfunction may have been caused by the severe storm last night and resulting power outage. Approximately four inches of standing of water had seeped onto the roadway from one of the pump houses.
Motorists should also anticipate alternating lane closures at the Route 17 James River Bridge in both directions for the electric company to make repairs to live electrical lines. Crews hope to complete repairs before rush hour. Traffic remains heavy, but steady throughout the area.
