Carrie Singer had a smile that could light up a room.
But the 28-year-old's life was cut short when she was murdered in July of 2004. Investigators still haven't made an arrest.
"It's extremely discouraging and this was a brutal, brutal slaying."
Carrie's mom had never been to Isle of Wight.
But, when Isle of Wight investigators asked NewsChannel 3 to help with the case she flew up from Florida to talk to us.
"I don't want another family to go through what we're going through. This person is out there and they will do this again."
Investigator sergeant Randy Patrick says this is the case that haunts him.
He and captain Paul Phelps have worked desperately to solve it - even hiring a psychic at one point.
That's why they're opening up the Carrie's file for NewsChannel 3, taking us through the twists and turns of the investigation.
The crime scene photos are so disturbing they can't be shown on television.
The crime scene was a quiet farm in the Morgarts Beach area in Smithfield. But Patrick isn't convinced the killer knew the area or lives in Isle of Wight.
"A lot might think it had to been someone local to find this locality. But, then again, if you're traveling down a country road and looking for a dirt lane to dispose of something, and you see a dirt lane, that might be the lane of choice," says Patrick
To find out how Carrie got there investigators had to look at her last days alive.
One thing stuck out on June 29th.
"Carrie and her boyfriend had been involved in a pretty bloody domestic dispute."
That led investigators to the house she shared with her boyfriend in Hampton.
"There's scattered blood on the first floor, downstairs around the bedroom, their dresser. And then blood on into the downstairs bathroom. Mostly splatter," says Patrick.
But Carrie was the one accused of assaulting her boyfriend Robert Dezern. And she turned up in Newport News the next day alive and well.
Investigators say she checked into what was called the King James Motel back in 2004.
