A company in Hampton Roads that would have been closed - losing it's entire workforce - is saved after employees bought their company back.
But not before the national company went out of business in Hampton Roads.
President Scott Gandy, reasoned that if they got back to the practices that made them successful before they sold the business he and the employees could make it work
"We've been through economic downturns in the past as Kempsville in the 35 years we worked together and we always made it through."
They've got recognition over the years that adorn the walls that speak to long and trusted reputation.
And vice president Brenda Onley came out of retirement to work with her colleague of 35 years to ensure its success.
"I wanted to get back and just help the employees get them to their retirement goal and I could walk out and say everything is good "
And that is the news employees wanted to hear, nearly 100 of them would have been out of work if someone didn't come to the rescue.
"Ididn't know where I was going to work what was going to happen and I'm six years away from retirement so...its like wow."
But now it's a whole new day - and a whole new way of doing business.
And Kempsville Building Supplydidn't waste time reclaiming its old name and business strategy.
"Start small grow it back watch every penny and don't let yourself get carried away with the cost of everything and y ou culd make it back."
Brenda and Scott have imposed some very practical work orders to trim the budget.
They turn off the lights, they turn down the AC, and they save fuel by re-routing their deliveries.
And employees are doing their part to cut expenses as well. As a result, Kempsville Building Supply took action and saved nearly 100 jobs.
