Mothers against drunk driving today named a Virginia Beach prosecutor the top dui prosecutor in the country.

Charisse Black tearfully accepted the award, beating out hundreds of other prosecutors across the country.

She was nominated by Virginia's MADD leadership for her aggressive prosecutions of drunk drivers, and especially of a drunk who hurt a Virginia Beach police officer.

The commonwealth's attorney said Black excels at this assignment, even though dui laws and loopholes seem to change every year.

She says the legal challenge of staying on top of those changes is what keeps her motivated.

"I think it is the challenge, and the seriousness of the offense. We've reduced the BAC to .08, raised the drinking age to 21, and it is still not working. So the place to get them is in court."

Part of the presentation was personal for Charisse, and that explains the tears. Kaye Walsh, the woman who nominated her, lost a daughter to a drunk driver. She gave the prosecutor a pair of her daughter's earrings as a thank you.
