Around 10 p.m. last night on Coleman Ave. in Ocean View, firefighters arrived to find a dog locked inside a kennel still inside a duplex as smoke and fire spread throughout. Officials say the Norfolk Sheriff's Department found marijuana plants growing inside the home.
There is no word on the homeowner's name or charges.
Ashleigh Koestler thought her neighbor's dog was gone. "I thought it was dead," she said.
Norfolk firefighters pulled the pit-bull from his kennel and began working on him, using a life-saving oxygen mask specifically designed for pets. After 10 minutes, the dog started to come around.
Today, the dog was said to be doing just fine.
Norfolk firefighters are crediting the pet-oxygen masks with saving the lives of many pets since they started using them about a year and a half ago. The kits, all donated by private citizens, are now on just about every Norfolk fire and medical unit.
The Norfolk Fire Department is still looking for people who want to donate the pet-oxygen masks. Each tax-deductible donation of $70 includes a kit with a variety of masks in different sizes
