Newport News police search for suspects in string of car thefts
Newport News detectives are seeking assistance from the Community, in solving a large number of cases involving damage to, and larcenies from, cars.

Between June 1 and July 25, 2010, 134 cases have been reported in the area between J. Clyde Morris Boulevard and Oyster Point Road with the majority occurring between J. Clyde Morris Boulevard and Middle Ground Boulevard. Most of the incidents apparently occurred in the late evening and overnight with some appearing to have happened during the early evening.

In the incidents involving larcenies from the cars, an extremely large number of the victims had left their cars unlocked allowing the thieves easy access to anything left inside. Once again, these incidents should serve as a reminder to everyone to take their keys and lock the doors upon leaving their cars.

In cases involving only damage to the cars, the damage included broken windows and radio antennas being bent or broken.

Detectives and patrol officers are working to both prevent additional incidents and to determine who is responsible for these latest cases.
