Folks are getting letters from the Virginia Department of Taxation saying they owe money.
In some cases the state is asking for money from tax returns from a few years ago!
Patrick Evans Hylton says he pays his taxes every year, on time. So he was shocked when he opened up a letter saying he owed more than a thousand dollars to the state, from 2003 and 2005.
"It's hard to remember what you did last year much less four to six years ago so obviously it was concerning, alarming."
Patrick Farrell is in the same boat. He got this letter from a collection agency saying he owes thousands of dollars from 2003, 2004 and 2005. He says the penalties and interest are almost as much as the taxes.
"It has taken a long amount of time for them to come after this issue and they are stating the penalty and interest are going to be compounded and that is a serious concern."
Both Patricks say they don't mind paying the original bill, but not the penalties. They said they thought they paid their taxes those years and had no idea they owed more.
"Usually one is made aware of that by the fed or by the state right after those tax years are due for filing."
WTKR took action to find out what's going on. A spokesman said the state couldn't find them until now and since there is no statue of limitations, they owe the money. But the department isn't going through old tax returns trying to find money to collect.
