NewsChannel 3 is taking action to help those in need, because hundreds of families in Currituck County will wake up Christmas morning without any presents under the tree.

Currituck County Social Services was able to handle the requests for help in the past, but this year the number is six times as many than before - 470 families need help.

Operation Santa has some toys, but it needs more.

"We have seen more applicants than we have ever seen historically come into this county and applicants for their children," said stephanie Bradley, social work supervisor.

The agency has had to do something like never before - go on television and ask for help.

"I think that soliciting like now that the word will get out and people will help they are going to dig down in their pockets and they will help," she added.

Stephanie Bradley says DSS has been doing Operation Santa for over 20 years, but this year they have fallen way short.

"They are desperate they are scared of all of their venues when you are talking about how to deed their families and how to get Christmas for children they are calling us," she said.

Social Services says they need you to take action to make sure they can help every family.

"It would be wonderful for children and parents because it is so stressful for them to not be able to buy, every parent wants to wake up and give their children gifts on Christmas morning."
