Today it was about reunions as families were bundled up and ready to welcome home their sailors.
The crew aboard the USS Wasp arrived at Naval Station Norfolk to a crowd of family and friends.
The USS Wasp has spent the past three months in South America working with partner nations on security missions and humanitarian efforts. The crew confiscated six million dollars worth of cocaine during this deployment. Returning sailors say it was a job worth the sacrifice of being away from their loved ones.
As the sailors returned just in time for the holidays many families got their Christmas wishes a couple days early.
"It's a big family tradition for her family and mine, so her coming home today is just a great Christmas present," said Matt Currey, husband of a sailor.
The ship's commanding officer said pulling in pierside is only half the battle. Several of the sailors will have to leave Naval Station Norfolk and go to the airport to catch their flight so they can also return home.
