A bill making its way in Richmond would change what information can be found from the state's sex offender registry.

Currently there are sex offender websites that list where offenders live and where they work, but now a state senator from Virginia is pushing to keep some of those details from public record.

Senator Dave Marsden wants to remove the business name where each of the sex offenders work and instead just list the address of the employer. The plan is to protect the businesses from any stigma, and to give convicted offenders a chance to make a smooth transition back to the community.

It's a move many in Virginia Beach agree with.

"I think they get out and they're constantly paying a sentence their whole life though they've already served their time," said Yvonne Gefrish, Virginia Beach local.

"I can see people not wanting to shop or do business there," said another local.

"They're back into society so they need a second chance."

There are others who believe in order to protect their kids, it's important to know all the details about where sex offenders live and work.

"Your kids are your kids you don't want nothing out of line around them so everything needs to be documented," said Vincent Bradley of Virginia Beach.

"If the employment caters to children then it makes sense to register that."

NewsChannel 3 spoke with a manager of a business where a sex offender works. The manager there said off camera she is in favor of the bill because everyone deserves a second chance and she thinks it's unfair to the businesses.
