VIRGINIA BEACH -
A Virginia Beach man picked up a giant check from a Sandbridge convenience store this morning.
Joseph Daniels bought five "Virginia's $5 million Club" scratch tickets from the Jr. Market Sandbridge store on July 22nd.
One the fourth ticket, he won $20.
However, the last one he scratched turned out to be a $1 million winner.
He says, "I started scratching the final ticket. I said, alright I won something. Then I scratched and saw all these zeroes. I was like, is this ticket real? I flipped it over and looked again. Is this one of these tickets you buy and give to somebody you don't care about?"
Joseph chose to take the lump sum payout of $642,000 before taxes.
The store received a $10,000 bonus for selling the ticket.
Joseph works as a finance manager at a car dealership and he says he plans to use the winnings to pay off his mortgage. Despite the big win, he says he'll keep his job.
In 21 years, the Virginia Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
