A Virginia Beach woman is taking action for the community and her project could put a little extra cash in your pocket.

Kathleen Guzman, a mother of five, has had enough of school fundraisers in which students sell things like candy bars and magazines.

Guzman started her own business - a consignment sale event planning service.

"This is pretty much a way for me to volunteer and make a little bit of money as well as help out my friends and help out people who are in need. And help out organizations all at the same time," Guzman said.

Sellers can bring their unused items from around the house to be sold. They determine the price and receive a percentage of the profit.

"The responsibility of the group is to find the location and to get the volunteers to run the sale. And I come in with my computer system, I have scanners, and it looks just like a regular store."

Guzman will host her third consignment sale this Saturday at St. John Lutheran School in Norfolk. Fifty percent of those proceeds will go to the school while the other fifty percent will go back into the consigners pockets.

"Looking at a yard sale that we would have to organize ourselves and market ourselves as opposed to going with Kathleen who's going to do that for us. She's going to market it, she's organizing it, she's here everyday for taking items in that people are donating or want to sell. So that takes the weight off of us as a staff," said Barbara Krumm, Director, St. John Lutheran School.

With everyone sharing the profits, it's not just the organizations she is helping.

"These groups, I mean they are desperate for money. The funding is being cut and not only does the group need money, but the families need money. Everybody is struggling right now," Guzman said.
