VIRGINIA BEACH—
WalMart advertises that it keeps rolling back prices but a recent study found otherwise.A JP Morgan Chase study of a WalMart Supercenter in Virginia Beach say the company raised prices by nearly 6% on average over the past six weeks. Some of the price hikes were considerably larger.
For example, the price of a 32-ounce bottle of Windex household cleaner jumped 50%.
A 12-ounce box of Quaker Oats Instant Grits climbed 65% while a 50-ounce container of Tide detergent rose by more than 50%. With WalMart's rising prices, which stores have the best prices now?
NewsChannel 3 took action to find out, pricing three items, including the Tide detergent, a 42-ounce can of Quaker Oats oatmeal, and a two-pack of Bounty paper towels.
At WalMart, Tide laundry detergent cost $10.94, a two-pack of paper towels cost $5.00 and the can of oatmeal cost $3.28.
The second stop was Food Lion.
There, the laundry detergent cost $13.99, the two-pack of paper towels cost $6.99 and a can of oatmeal cost $4.29.
So far, WalMart retains the best deals.
So, NewsChannel 3 went to Target.
Target charged $10.00 for the Tide detergent, $6.49 for the two-pack of paper towels and $3.12 for the oatmeal.
So, although the study shows that WalMart prices have risen, when it comes to these three items, they are still the cheapest compared to other stores in the area.
