Ping Li and Susan Dong refused to leave Zedd's Auction House on Friday. They said auctioneer Stephen Zedd owes them a lot of money, and all they've gotten are empty promises. They ran the former China Garden in Pembroke Mall and say they are owed $17,000.
"I've been here more than 10 times, 20 times. He says he pay today, or the afternoon, or tomorrow, or sent a check out already, all are like that. All are like that."
The say they were promised the money today, but when they showed up, a worker ordered them out. They sat down. Police were worried they'd have to arrest the pair. We convinced them to come out, avoid an arrest, and talk to us.
They're not the only ones who say they've been stiffed by Stephen Zedd. The owners of Portsmouth's Family Pizza say the auctioneer sold their stuff, and kept the money.
"I don't know what anybody else is doing about their money, but we want our money," says owner Vanessa Ciamato
Li and Dong got nothing today. The office worker, a man who keeps promising to get our messages to Stephen Zedd, refused to answer questions.
We went to find Stephen Zedd at the addresses he's listed in court files and on public records. At both apartment buildings, they said he didn't live there. One worker said Stephen Zedd has been claiming his parents' address as his own.
Back at the auction house, two women from the Eastern Shore showed up to buy a display case. They said Zedd stood them up yesterday and told them to come back today.
Six hours of driving and $34 in tolls, for nothing.
Both sets of restaurant owners are out much more, $30,000 between them, and nothing but broken promises from the auction house.
