FORT MONROE CELEBRATES FOURTH WITH FIREWORKS, FREE SHOW Stand tall and proud at Fort Monroe this July 4 as the installation pays tribute to America's independence with a mid-day Salute to the Union ceremony, an evening concert featuring funk and R&B artists The Average White Band (AWB), and the always-popular fireworks spectacular on the shores of Mill Creek. The day's activities will begin with the traditional 50-gun salute ceremony, starting at 11:55 a.m. at Continental Park. With each of the nation's state flags positioned on site, Garrison Commander Col. Anthony D. Reyes will give brief remarks, followed by the 105mm (towed) Howitzer tribute featuring the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Salute Battery. One round will be fired for each state in the union. The event is free and open to the public. Afterward, guests are encouraged to visit with the firing battery Soldiers on site. At 5 p.m., the gates will open for the evening concert and fireworks spectacular. That event takes place at Walker Airfield on Fenwick Road. Admission also is free and open to the public. No pets, coolers, backpacks, food or beverages may be brought in to the concert area. No weapons are allowed on post. Lawn chairs and blankets for seating are permitted. The opening entertainment for the evening will be Tidewater Drive, a seven-member "dance-party" band from Chesapeake. Their repertoire includes disco, funk, R&B, country and just about anything else the audience wants to hear, according to the Web site www.twd.com . "We want people to forget their troubles for a while," said the band's lead singer, Jennifer Jones, in a recent news article. "Everything we play is to get people moving." Their performance begins at approximately 5:30 p.m. Gator Allmond and the Spice of Life Band takes over the stage at approximately 6:30 p.m. Gator has become a regular at the annual concert. Known for his spot-on impersonations of famous R&B singers from the '70s and '80s, as well as a dynamite rendition of Ike and Tina Turner's "Rollin' on the River," he has been wowing local audiences for more than a decade. Prior to that, he was in the Air Force Band program. The evening continues at approximately 8 p.m. with the headline performance by The Average White Band. Formed in Scotland in 1971, AWB first caught the eye of the music industry when they landed a gig as the opening act for Eric Clapton's comeback tour in 1973. That same year, they released their first recording in the U.S. - a self-titled vinyl that collectors later dubbed "The White Album" - which hit number one on the "Hot 100" chart. One of its titled tracks, "Pick up the Pieces," became a top single in 1975. The band's next two albums, "Cut the Cake" and "Soul Searching," also were big sellers that yielded several Top 40 singles. With their popularity dwindling in the early 1980's, AWB decided to call it quits and they pursued individual music ventures for the next several years. In 1989, Alan Gorrie, Onnie McIntyre and Roger Ball, all original members, reunited to record "Aftershock." It was the first step in a comeback journey that once again put AWB in the spotlight and resulted in three more albums, including a 2003 release "Living in Colour" and the 2006 cut "Soul & the City." Today, AWB continues to enjoy a loyal following, particularly among jazz lovers and fans of the groovy '60s and '70s funk sound (a la Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Donny Hathaway) that made the group famous three decades ago. AWB's remaining tour schedule this year includes performances in more than a dozen states and a late summer sweep through Scotland, Holland, England and Wales. To read more about the band and its latest work, visit www.averagewhiteband.com . The fourth festivities will conclude with the fireworks spectacular, starting at approximately 9:30 p.m. Other event activities include souvenir stands and a wide variety of food and beverage vendors. Fourth at the Fort visitors are offered the following traffic and installation access information to make arrival and departure run smoothly: First and foremost, access to the installation for anyone 18 years and older requires a valid picture ID. All three installation gates, to include Stilwell, will be open as of 4 p.m. for the day's activities; however, the Ingalls Road entrance is restricted to vehicles with a DoD decal. All visiting traffic will be directed to designated parking areas. The Mercury Boulevard entrance to Fort Monroe will be closed to all inbound and outbound traffic as of 8:50 p.m. The route will reopen at the conclusion of the fireworks display around 10 p.m. Long lines of traffic at the end of the evening are pretty much guaranteed. All motorists are asked to be patient and be very observant of pedestrians crossing streets and parking lots on the way to their vehicles. In case of severe weather, all music performances will be cancelled and the fireworks will be rescheduled for the evening of July 5. For more information, call 788-3151 or visit www.monroemwr.com .
