Virginia, Beach, Va. -- Several very private medical records were made public!

A local gas company asked NewsChannel 3 to take action after receiving piles of extremely sensitive information!

A misprinted fax number that had two digits transposed is what led to sensitive medical records being sent to a local gas company.

NewsChannel 3 found out Virginia Oncology Associates in Virginia Beach was the intended recipient of all of these records, not the gas company.

The documents had everything from a cancer diagnosis to a prescription drug refill request.

"Where they live, what they do, any testing they've had done,” says Donna Tanega, who received the reports.

But the fax number for the gas company is similar to the one for Virginia Oncology.

The gas company's fax was actually published in a medical directory used by doctors known as "The Little Yellow Book."

We contacted the company that puts the directory together.

While they didn't take responsibility, they say the mistake was fixed immediately.
