A 36-year-old Franklin man was arrested early Tuesday after injuring two patrons of a bar with a knife during an altercation.

Virginia Beach Police officers responded to Calypso Bar and Grill around 2:00 a.m. and found Ryan David Brouckaert being held down by employees and several patrons of the bar.

Bar manager Marcus Garvin says Brouckaert ran up a $150 tab before he tried to sneak out without paying.

He says Brouckaert became more aggressive when the bartender stopped him and asked to see his ID.

Brouckaert pulled out a knife after being confronted and several people then wrestled him to the ground, holding him until police arrived.

Several patrons were injured by the knife during the attempt to control him.

"I was reaching for the wrist just so maybe I could get the wrist and he wouldn't be able to use that hand with the knife in it and he jerked the knife back against me hand," says Ray Bartron.

Bartron now has 14 stitches in his right hand ring finger. He's one of five people who wrestled Brouckaert to the ground.

"It was pretty much instincts kicked in with everybody once they saw the knife," says Garvin.

Brouckaert was charged with two counts of malicious assault, credit card theft and fraud, and defrauding an innkeeper.

He remains in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond.
