A VDOT contractor was struck by a vehicle on I-64 eastbound at Chesapeake Boulevard on Tuesday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

It happened at 9:12 a.m. The contractor was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was a woman who told state troopers that she was distracted by her kids in the car. By the time she looked up and noticed the work zone, it was too late to move over and she hit the worker with her side mirror.

The worker was struck in the shoulder.

The driver is facing reckless driving charges. She was not charged with a violation of the move over law since state police did not see the violation occur.

The accident happened just two hours before Virginia State Police launched their “Drive 2 Save Lives” campaign.

The campaign aims to reduce traffic deaths by 15 percent this year. Last year, 741 people died on Virginia roads. They need 111 fewer people to die in crashes this year to achieve that goal.
