LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – A Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office deputy was charged with felony animal cruelty Thursday after an investigation revealed he killed his pet dog and discarded its remains in a dumpster.
Deputy Dustin W. Moon, 37, had been employed by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office for 11 years.
An internal investigation began in May into an unrelated administrative violation. During that investigation, it was learned that Moon killed his dog and discarded the remains in a dumpster sometime between February and March.
Moon turned himself over to authorities in Warren County on Thursday. He has since been released on a $3,000 unsecured bond.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office says he is on paid administrative leave pending personnel action.
