NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A family of five has been forced out of their home after their garage caught on fire in the 200 block of Center Avenue Wednesday night.

The call came in at 7:12 p.m., and the first unit from the Newport News Fire Department arrived on scene just six minutes later to find a fully-involved fire in the detached garage.

Fire officials say the garage was completely destroyed, and there was additional damage to the outside of the home as a result.

The fire was called under control at 7:34 p.m., and no one was hurt.

While the home is in livable conditions, fire officials told News 3 the property manager of the home displaced the family - two adults and three children - in order to assess the damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
