Chesapeake Fire Department responds to large mulch fire, road partially closed due to smoke

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Chesapeake firefighters are currently on the scene of a massive mulch fire at Tidewater Green, located at 5444 Bainbridge Boulevard in the Portlock section of the City.

Firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 3:44 a.m., and when they arrived on the scene eight minutes later, they found a large mulch pile on fire. The fire was brought under control at 5:24 a.m.

Crews will be operating on the scene for an extended period as they continue to extinguish the fire. No injuries have been reported for this incident.

Due to the fire, a large amount of smoke is present in the area that is generating multiple calls to the Chesapeake Dispatch Center. There is no danger to the public, but those with breathing issues may wish to remain indoors and avoid the smoke.

The 5400 block of Bainbridge Boulevard is closed to vehicle traffic due to fire crews operating on the scene.
