Two killed in hostage standoff in Chesapeake

Chesapeake, Va. – Two hostages died and their alleged captor was wounded in a standoff with police in Chesapeake Sunday  morning.

44-year-old Charles Collins of Pollicksville, North Carolina was shot in the head once by SWAT team members. He survived and was transported to Norfolk General Hospital.

Collins has been charged with 2 counts of 1st Degree Murder, 5 counts of abduction and multiple firearms charges.

The incident began when police responded to a report of shots fired in the 1300 block of Canal Drive shortly before 1am. When officers arrived, they heard screaming and shots fired from inside the home.

Shortly after their arrival two people escaped from the home.  One had been shot and later died at Norfolk General Hospital.  He has been identified as 19-year-old Derwin Watts, from the 1300 block of Canal Dr.

After unsuccessfully trying to negotiate with Collins, SWAT team members stormed the home, shooting him.

Police then discovered a second victim inside the residence who had been shot and killed.

He has been identified as 40-year-old Michael Temple from the 800 block of Brooks Av. in Elizabeth City, NC.
