Police release new details about what led to officer-involved shooting

Posted

NewsChannel 3 is learning more about what police say happened between 18-year-old Antonio Miller and a Newport News Police Officer that ended in gunfire and Miller in the hospital.

Investigators say the Officer was on special duty patrolling the Marshall Court Apartments for the City House Authority, when he got a call about a man firing a gun into the air in the Marshall Courts area.

When the Officer spotted Miller, Police say Miller led him on a chase, ending with Miller falling on the ground.

A witness, who doesn’t want to be identified, told NewsChannel 3 that’s when things turned rough.

Police say Miller resisted arrest, so the officer used pepper spray.

Investigators say the officer noticed Miller’s gun was still in reach, so he tried to get to it.

And that’s when police say Miller grabbed the officer’s hand and gun.

Police say the two struggled over the gun.

But a witness says Miller was cooperating.

Investigators say during the struggle, the officer pulled out his gun and shot Miller once with the bullet going through his wrist and abdomen.

They say he was scared for his life and the safety of others.

Miller is still in jail and he faces gun charges and resisting arrest.
