Beryl causes boaters to change plans

Everyone and everything is drying out now after Beryl drenched much of the Outer Banks.

Roads were flooded and conditions were nasty.

On the coast, the storm forced many boaters closer to the mainland.

John Guider sailed up the Atlantic Coast to New York City, but even he knew it was foolish to challenge Beryl as it hit North Carolina.

“This year it seems like there's been a storm every day. Beryl's sort of the icing on the cake. And I raced to try and get as far north as I could before it hit,” says Guider.

With a sailboat he built himself, he stopped in Elizabeth City.

Billed as the harbor of hospitality, Guider is happy he waited it out there.

“The people over here have been very wonderful to me. They've really taken me in and let me stay out of the weather,” says Guider.

Fortunately, the water levels were low and there was no flooding.

Guider likes Elizabeth City, but he won't be staying any longer than he has to.

John Lavake has the same worries. He could handle Beryl, he's not so sure about what's next.
