Hampton police kill man who attacked them with baseball bat

Update: Police have identified the victim as Bryant Michael Weiford, a 26-year-old
Hampton man with a last known address in the 400 block of Old Buckroe Road.

Hampton, Va. – Two Hampton police officers shot and killed a man who attacked them with a baseball bat early Sunday morning.

 According to police, a Hampton Police Officer was in the 100 Block of West Pembroke Avenue when a disorderly man in the roadway struck his patrol car with a baseball bat.

After a second Hampton Police Officer arrived on scene the two officers confronted the man and demanded he drop the weapon.

The man charged towards the officers still armed with the baseball bat and both officers shot him.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:33 a.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that prior to the officer’s arrival the man had also struck several other vehicles with the baseball bat. The man has not been identified at this time. Once he has been identified and his next-of-kin has been notified his information will be released.

The two officers that were involved have all been placed on administrative leave with pay per division policy.
