Newport News police officer shoots man during traffic stop

Newport News, Va. – A man was wounded by a Newport News police officer during a traffic stop Saturday night.

According to Newport News police, at about 8:39 officers conducted a traffic stop in the 600 block of 34th Street.

As an officer approached the car a physical altercation occurred resulting in an officer firing his gun and striking a 22-year-old man in the right arm.

He was taken by medics to a local hospital with what appears to be a non-life threatening injury.

A stolen handgun was recovered at the scene.

The officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave.

There will be two investigations, one by the Homicide Unit the other by Professional Standards.
