According to State Police, a firefighter died Monday morning in a crash involving a Bloxom Volunteer Fire Department vehicle.
Police say the crash occurred at 11:31 a.m. in the 27000 block of Nelsonia Road, between the Town of Bloxom and Route 13 in Accomack County.
An investigation revealed that the driver of the fire truck, James Richard Lambirth, 44, lost control of the vehicle while in a curve. Police say he ran off the road striking several trees. The fire truck overturned and the passenger, David Raymond Chew, Jr., 30, was ejected.
Police say Chew was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident and died on impact.
Lambirth was taken to the Peninsula Regional Center Hospital where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say a firefighter will be charged in the accident.
