According to Virginia Beach EMS, a man in his 70’s was in the water at the oceanfront at 60th Street with four to five other people when the group suddenly began having difficulty in the water.

People on the shore went into the water to assist them, and were able to help all but one to shore. A surfer in the area noticed the commotion and also went over to help.

The surfer saw that the man was floating face down and was able to put him on his surf board. Lifeguards helped him bring the man back to shore where EMS crews took over.

The man was transported to the hospital and is in critical condition.
