Virginia Beach father charged in baby girl’s death

Virginia Beach police have arrested and charged a man in the death of his baby daughter.

Police say on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at approximately 7:30 p.m., the suspect called emergency response teams to report that his 14-month-old daughter was unresponsive.

Police and EMS responded to the 500 block of Aylesbury Drive. Officials say the victim allegedly fell and hit her head while playing. The suspect initially applied ice to the baby’s head and then placed her in a crib. The suspect checked on the victim later, and found her unresponsive.

The baby girl was transported to a local hospital and died days later, officials say. Detectives conducted an investigation which resulted in the arrest of the suspect.

The victim has been identified as 14-month-old Melanie Brantley of the 500 block of Aylesbury Drive.

The cause of death was a result of a head injury and was determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Marcus Dewayne Brantley of Aylesbury Drive in Virginia Beach. He is charged with Felony Child Neglect.

Brantley is currently being held without bond in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.

This case remains under investigation.
