According to a press release from VDOT, the Gilmerton Bridge (Route 13/Military Highway) will close to all vehicular traffic this weekend beginning Friday evening, Aug. 24, through Monday morning, Aug. 27, in order for crews to prepare for the bridge lift span float-in scheduled for this September.
Officials say the bridge is also scheduled to close Friday evening, Aug. 31, and reopen the morning of Saturday, Sept. 1. Maritime traffic will not be affected by the closures.
The Gilmerton Bridge Replacement Project Weekend Closure Plan:
Friday, Aug. 24 at 8 p.m. through 5 a.m., Monday, Aug. 27
Friday, Aug. 31 at 8 p.m. through 7 a.m., Saturday, Sept.1
The Gilmerton Bridge is also closed weeknights, Sunday through Thursday, closing each night at 8 p.m. and opening each morning by 5 a.m.
Motorists are encouraged to use the Interstate 64 High Rise Bridge as an alternate route during the overnight bridge closures. The Interstate 264 Downtown Tunnel is also considered an alternate route.
