Folks in Poquoson can now have chickens in their backyards.

But before you start building the coop, know the planning commission did create some specific guidelines.

People who just want a small group can have six chickens regardless of the size of their yard.

If you want more than that, you must have a lot bigger than an acre.

Also, the chicken pen must be kept 15 feet from side yards and property lines.

According to Kevin M. Wyne with the City of Poquoson, chickens are permitted in the city with a Farm Animal Permit.

They currently have over 25 active Farm Animal Permit holders.

He also says on "Monday evening, the Planning Commission recommended the proposed language for approval to City Council.  Whether or not this language becomes law is up to City Council.  It will go before Public Hearing at City Council on October 22, 2012 at 7 pm."
