Portsmouth police investigate death of 6-year-old

This morning at approximately 8:52 a.m., police received a 911 call of an unresponsive 6-year-old boy in the 300 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue.

Officers and medics responded and found the child inside the home. Family members called 911 after they attempted to wake the child from sleep. He was pronounced dead by medics at 8:56 a.m.

Homicide detectives and investigators with the Norfolk Medical Examiners Office responded to the scene. The body was transported to the Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy.

There was no apparent trauma to the body, and no obvious signs of foul play, police say.
