Update: Portsmouth man charged with robbery, threatening to bomb building

Update: Detectives say they have arrested and charged 52-year-old Carl Odell Varner, Jr., of the 2700 block of Greenwood Drive. He has been charged with two counts of robbery. 

At around 11:00 am on Thursday, Varner was riding his bicycle in the area of the 2300 block of Greenwood Drive when he was taken into custody. 

He was also charged with threatening to bomb a building.  

Portsmouth, Va. –Portsmouth police need your help to find a suspected bank robber. 

Police say there was a robbery at a Suntrust Bank located at 4016 Victory Boulevard on Tuesday morning at around 9:22 a.m. 

Employees called dispatch after the suspect took an undisclosed amount of money from the bank. 

Police say the suspect went into the bank and implied he had an explosive device. After getting the money he ran away. 

Before he left, police say he left an object inside of the building. 

As a precaution, the bomb squad and Virginia State Police were called. 

The suspect is described as a white male between the ages of 40 and 50 years old.  He is approximately 6’0” tall and 190 lbs.  He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a dark jacket.
