No leaf burning in Newport News

Posted

Newport News, VA – The Newport News Fire Department would like to remind residents that the burning of leaves is not allowed in the City of Newport News.

Not only does the burning of leaves release harmful toxins into the air, it is a fire hazard – especially on a windy day.

Leaves and vegetation can hold heat for a period of days and can easily spread to area structures.

The City’s curbside loose leaf collection begins November 26, with two scheduled collections for each area of the city. More information on this program can be found at http://www.nngov.com/public-works.

Before and after the curbside collection program, citizens can place leaves in clear plastic bags for pick up on regularly scheduled bulk waste collection days.

Homeowners in the City of Newport News can call the Newport News Fire Department’s Smoke Alarm Hotline at 926-8009 if they need a smoke alarm.
