VDOT to test tide gates at I-64 HRBT

Posted

HAMPTON— VDOT will conduct routine tide gate testing at the Interstate 64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 5 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.

VDOT tests the tide gates for the I-64 HRBT every six months. First, crews will test the eastbound tide gates, release traffic, and then they will test the westbound tide gates and release traffic.

Motorists traveling on both I-64 east— and westbound through the HRBT should expect traffic stops of up to 30 minutes as each gate is tested. Maintenance operations for both tunnels consist of successfully cycling the associated tide gates and roadway drain valves. Upon completion of all associated maintenance activities, traffic will be released.

VDOT suggests that motorists avoid delays by using the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) as an alternate route.
