74-year-old dies in crash on Northampton Blvd. in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach, Va. – According to Virginia Beach police, one person is dead after a fatal accident on EB  Northampton Blvd. and Independence on Wednesday night.

The victim has been identified as 74-year-old Jerry H. Simpkins of the 700 block of North Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach.

At approximately 6:55 p.m., Emergency Communications received a report of a single vehicle crash in the 5000 block of Northampton Boulevard.

Police, Fire, and EMS responded to the crash and located a 1997 Ford Aerostar minivan with the driver unresponsive.

Investigators say the minivan was traveling eastbound in the right lane. As the driver approached the Independence Boulevard (south) exit ramp, the vehicle went off the roadway to the right, striking the guardrail and a utility power pole. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s office.

Speed and alcohol are not factors in this investigation. This case remains under investigation
