Portsmouth, Va. – Officials with Elizabeth River Crossings (ERC) say the organization is prepared for the forecasted snowfall this Saturday and is mobilizing additional staff and equipment to help keep the Downtown and Midtown Tunnels and associated roadways safe for motorists.
Operations and maintenance staff, safety service patrols and supplemental staffing from contractor resources will be fully staged and on standby by 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon and will remain staffed throughout the night. The contractor will also provide extra de-icing equipment and de-icing materials.
Motorists are encouraged to monitor the weather and road conditions and to assess travel plans accordingly.
Headquartered in Portsmouth, Virginia, Elizabeth River Crossings OpCo, LLC, is the private partner of the Virginia Department of Transportation for the design, construction, finance, operations and maintenance of the Elizabeth River Tunnels Project.
Located in Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia, the Project is comprised of a new two-lane tunnel under the Elizabeth River parallel to the existing Midtown Tunnel; fire, life and safety modifications and upgrades to the existing Midtown Tunnel and Downtown Tunnels; interchange modifications in Norfolk and Portsmouth; extending the MLK in Portsmouth from London Boulevard to I-264; and complete operations and maintenance responsibilities of the Elizabeth River Tunnels and associated roadways.
